SOIL IMPROVEMENT

In many cases, considerable savings can be achieved by soil improvement. GRV has long experience regarding the design, planning, execution and monitoring of different soil improvement methods. We have participated in the execution of several large infrastructure projects, such as the airports of Chep Lap Kok – Hong Kong, Changi – Singapore, Lankawi – Malaysia. GRV personnel are currently involved in the design and construction of the Seeb Airport, Oman.

We have also participed actively in the development of several European foundation standards, for instance soil stabilization by deep mixing, vertical drainage and vibratory compaction. GRV can advise on the application of  the following ground improvement methods:

  • Deep Mixing
    • Design of soil improvement according to the European standard (R. Massarsch has been Convenor of WG 10 “Deep Stabilization”).
    • Planning of soil improvement projects by mixing of dry or wet stabilizers.
    • Control and testing of stabilized columns by seismic methods.
  • Vertical Drainage
    • Design of soil improvement according to the European norm (R. Massarsch has been Convenor of WG 11 “Vertical Drainage”).
    • Planning of vertical drainage projects including surcharge.
    • Optimization of surcharging with respect to vertical drainage.
  • Vibratory Compaction
    • Design of soil improvement projects according to the European norm (R. Massarsch has been a member of the Swedish working group “Vibratory Compaction”).
    • Compaction regarding static loading (reducing settlements) and dynamic loading (earthquakes and liquefaction).
    • Combination of soil compaction with piling.
    • Development and application of deep vibratory compaction by variable frequency vibrators (resonance compaction), which has gained extensive international recognition.
    • Monitoring and opitmization of surface compaction by vibratory rollers.
